Blackjack surrender: sometimes the best move is to walk away from half your bet

When should you surrender in blackjack?

Surrender is right in only a small number of spots, but where it applies it's one of the clearest calls in basic strategy. Late surrender lets you give up half your bet and end the hand once the dealer has checked for blackjack. Think of it as a 50p-in-the-pound test: surrendering only beats playing on when your expected loss from hitting or standing is worse than losing exactly half your stake, which happens on weak, hard totals like 15 and 16 against a strong dealer up card. Outside those specific combinations, playing the hand normally has a better expected return than surrendering.

Why surrender 16 against a 10?

Because both hitting and standing cost more than the 50p in the pound that surrendering costs. Hard 16 is often called the worst hand in blackjack for a reason: standing loses to most dealer totals, and hitting busts more often than it doesn't, since any ten-value card breaks the hand. We played 16 against a 10 two million times each way. Hitting cost 57.1p per £1 staked and standing cost 57.5p. Those figures include the hands where the dealer turns over blackjack; strip those out, as late surrender does, and both options still cost around 54p. Surrender costs exactly 50p, so you walk away. The same logic applies, slightly less severely, to 16 against 9 or ace, and to 15 against a ten.

What is the difference between late and early surrender?

Late surrender, the version this calculator assumes, happens after the dealer checks for blackjack, so you never surrender into a hand that was already lost regardless. Early surrender, offered at far fewer tables today, lets you surrender before that check, which is better for the player since it also covers hands where the dealer would have had blackjack anyway, but it's rare enough in 2026 that most UK-facing sites don't offer it at all. Always check which version, if either, your table uses before relying on this calculator's assumptions.

H17 adds two surrender spots

Whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17 (A-6) changes which hands are worth surrendering, which is why the calculator above asks for it. Under H17 rules, a dealer showing an ace is more dangerous, since they'll draw extra cards on a soft 17 rather than stopping there, reaching strong final totals more often. That pushes two extra spots into surrender territory that don't apply under S17: hard 15 against a dealer ace, and even hard 17 against a dealer ace, both of which stay "play the hand" under standard S17 rules. Check your table's rules card or game info panel for which one applies before leaning on either chart.
