Player total 5: draws a third card. Banker total 3: draws a third card (Player's third card was 5). None of this is a decision, live baccarat and every online version apply this table automatically and identically every time, there's no strategy to learn here.
A card game with no decisions
Unlike blackjack, where the player actively chooses whether to hit or stand, baccarat gives neither Player nor Banker a real choice. Every hand follows the same fixed drawing table, sometimes called the tableau, published by every casino and identical worldwide. That's an unusual feature for a card game, and it's the whole reason baccarat has no basic strategy chart the way blackjack does, there's nothing to decide. This calculator exists purely to satisfy curiosity about how a specific hand plays out, not because knowing it changes anything you can do at the table.
When does the Player draw a third card?
Player acts first, and the rule is straightforward: with a two-card total of 0 through 5, Player draws a third card. With 6 or 7, Player stands. That's it, no further conditions. The only exception is a natural, a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards for either side, which ends the hand immediately with both sides standing, regardless of what Player's total would otherwise call for.
When does the Banker draw a third card?
Banker's rule looks more complicated because Banker acts second and, when Player drew a third card, gets to use the exact value of that card to fine-tune the odds slightly in the casino's favour. The full table:

When Player stood (a total of 6 or 7), Banker simply mirrors Player's own rule, drawing on a total of 0 through 5 and standing on 6 or 7. When Player drew, the table above takes over. Either way, an 8 or 9 for Banker is a natural, both sides stand and the hand is over.
Does the third card rule favour the Banker?
The drawing table is tuned, very slightly, to favour Banker over Player, which is exactly why Banker's win probability (45.86%) edges out Player's (44.62%), and why the standard Banker bet carries a 5% commission to compensate. Our own simulation of 1.6 million hands under these rules landed on 45.79% and 44.68%, within a tenth of a point of the exact figures. None of it depends on who's watching or what happened on previous hands, it's identical software logic every single time, whether you're at a live-dealer table or an RNG-based online game. Who decides if a third card is drawn in baccarat?+
Nobody, it's entirely automatic. A fixed table, sometimes called the tableau, sets out exactly when Player and Banker draw a third card based purely on their two-card totals and, for Banker in some cases, the value of Player's third card. Dealers, live-dealer software and RNG-based online tables all apply the identical rule every time.
What is a "natural" in baccarat?+
A two-card total of 8 or 9 for either Player or Banker. If either side has a natural, both stand immediately, no third card is drawn by anyone, and the hand settles right there on the two-card totals.
When does the Player draw a third card?+
Whenever Player's first two cards total 0 through 5, and neither side has a natural. On a total of 6 or 7, Player automatically stands.
Why is Banker's rule more complicated than Player's?+
Because Banker acts second and gets to factor in the value of Player's third card, when Player drew one, which fine-tunes the odds. If Player stood, Banker simply mirrors Player's own rule, drawing on 0-5 and standing on 6-7. If Player drew, Banker's draw/stand decision on totals 3 through 6 depends on that specific card, as the calculator above shows.
Does knowing the third card rule give a player an edge?+
No. It's already baked into the published odds and house edge for every baccarat bet, since it's applied identically on every hand regardless of who's watching. Knowing it satisfies curiosity and confirms there's no hidden decision-making in baccarat, but it doesn't change the maths on the baccarat hub page's odds calculator.
